Your Scholar-Athlete's Key to Success

A couple of years ago, ESPN was covering the Collegiate World Series. As the camera panned the dug-out, it caught the strange image of the freshman phenom pitcher for Oregon State University intently tapping on various points of his face with his fingers. The announcers bantered back and forth a bit about it and finally decided it was some form of stress management exercise. A few minutes later, another announcer's voice could be heard validating that yes, this was a focusing and stress reducing technique.

Oregon State Athletic Department's Sports Psychology Consultant, Greg Warburton, has gained national recognition for his contributions to the college's excellent sports program. His secret? EFT (The Emotional Freedom Technique). As Greg explained it during a recent conversation, a coach will tell the players to "shake off" a bad move or loss but generally doesn't have a specific method to help the player do so. The players tend to internalize the bad move or loss and end up focusing on that instead of getting back to playing their best game.

That's where EFT comes in.

Using EFT, the players address the mistake layer by layer and dissolve the unproductive thoughts and pictures that have taken root in their minds. I take it a step further by using hypnotherapy to anchor in the athlete's subconscious the perfect stance, position, follow-through, etc.

Greg confided that recognition of the value of these mind-body tools has been slow but powerful. More and more collegiate programs have been following in the footsteps of such athletes as Apolo Ono in capitalizing on these healthy, natural and highly effective performance boosters. You may have seen Ono "tapping" during the Winter Olympics.

I have worked with high school softball players, football players, basketball players, tennis players and swimmers, as well as adult golfers to help them improve their game. Improved focus and concentration, more wins, and less stress are the most common results. Every player I've worked with has recognized the benefits clearly and tangibly.

Give me a call to discuss what A Higher Perspective can do for your student-athlete and/or you!

Until next month, remember: All is moving toward the good.

Announcements

Back to School with A Higher Perspective

Consider A Higher Perspective for your child's most important back-to-school needs: confidence, stress management, focus and concentration, improved sports performance. Once your student is back in school, watch for changes in behavior and sleep patterns. It's not unusual for me to see teens with panic, anxiety and phobia concerns these days. I work with kids as young as 13, giving them mind-body-spirit tools they put to use immediately and benefit from their whole lives. They love it!

New Fee Information

I have restructured my fees. Please call or email me for details.

A Higher Perspective at Destination Maternity

As you may notice from this month's Calendar, John Muir Healthcare is opening a new center affiliated with the Women's Health Center in Walnut Creek. Destination Maternity is about all things pre-, during and post-pregnancy. I have been asked to provide the mind-body perspective on fertility three times this fall. The classes are free. For further information and registration, click here or call (925) 941-7900, option 3.

Behind the Scenes of A Higher Perspective

I may not twitter, tweet or hang out much on social networking sites, but I do have a blog. I'd love your comments on what's already there, and subjects you might like me to address. I think of it as an opportunity to have conversations with you. Check it out! Lucy's Blog
